Lake Tahoe Snowboarding

Last weekend my girlfriend and I headed up to Lake Tahoe to go snowboarding at Squaw Valley. I have been skiing since I was really young and am pretty good at it, but this time I decided to try snowboarding. I have been meaning to try it for a long time but after seeing the film First Decent I really knew it was time to give it a shot. I started off slow, learning how to turn and stop going down the super easy green circle bunny slope. After mastering that slope I decided to go ahead and hit the blue square chair. I got going pretty fast but I was totally out of control. I kept on catching the edge of my board in the snow as I rocked back and fourth and the verge of falling and my face and then my ass. This did not keep up long and I quickly fell hard on a sheet of ice. The weight of my fall was all absorbed by my right wrist bending backwards. I was pretty sure I had broken my wrist... on my second run. It hurt really bad and I could barely move it so I decided to get it checked out at the ski clinic. They took x-rays and determined it was not broken but was sprained in 2 places. The doctor gave me a wrist brace and sent me on my way. I was able to finish off the weekend wearing the brace and a new pair of wrist guards highly recommended for beginning snowbaorders. I love the simplicity of snowboarding over skiing, one board instead of 2 skis and 2 poles. Snowboarding boots are also much more comfortable than the robot like ski boots. I'd snowboard again for sure.

No Duh you did the ski widget. I said it in the last post. I knew I smelled a poo'ish something in the last update.
I was hoping they would let you do something more cool. Like umm anything else than that. They must not trust you. Small steps..small steps...

Mike, I'm hazarding a guess that you're one of the very few people to have digitally enhanced an x ray for aesthetic reasons. (Snowboarding is way cool, though!)

Having taught one of my friends to snowboard, I would say it's best to stick to all green runs for at least the first time up. Second time up, a few blue runs, sure, but it's best to get a very good feel for basic starting and stopping. (Of course, you probably know all this after the spill)
Next up: learning to rotate your board around. (Right hand vs. Left hand, etc)

Nice job on the widget Mike. I tried snowboarding about a year ago and did pretty much the same thing. I thought I was doing pretty good, so I took a "jump" and wound up on my ass with my wrists in pain. It was however, one of the cooler wipeouts that I had ;) Keep it up, snowboarding can be a ton of fun!

I did a very similar thing - first day, first time boarding was on ice, fell landed on the left wrist and completely destroyed it!! Very nasty although I did get off work for 6 months haha!! So not all bad, but I couldn't play my drums for all that time :(

I did the same thing as you about 1.5 weeks ago. I kept catching by back edge and wiping out on my tailbone. It's starting to feel better, and I had a great time, but I second your advice for wrist guards the first time out--I could have used them!

The Ski Resort widget is awesome and I use it all the time. The fact that it can only display in inches drives me crazy though (even if you change the temperature setting to Celsius!). Anyone know of a way to make it report snowfall in CM instead?
Two workers in my office broke their arms when they tried snowboarding for the very first time. One broke his arm at Northstar and the other at Heavenly. I wish you well.
I had skied for a while before trying snowboarding as well. The first few times I went it was really rough lots of falls, and then you all of the sudden just get it.
I went backcountry snowboarding through the woods on my fifth time snowboarding. I found to prevent catching the edge you just have to trust yourself and lean more than you think you need to.
