Bundling a Dashboard widget is just f'ing brilliant. :)
Sweet stuff! I was wondering though, it is possible, in Spotlight, for application to create their own categories? I'd love to have a dedicated Library category instead of having the library entries jumble up with my documents!
Elliott, we would love to have made our own category but unfortunately Apple does not support that yet. We have requested that Apple and this and the the second they do we will be there with our own category.
Does this application still include hidden Amazon Affiliate Kick-Backs if I click-thru to Amazon? Why should you receive kick-backs if I need to pay for this App? When I purchase from Amazon, I like to use my own Affiliate ID, which means I need to delete your ID, delete cookies & flush cache, before I make my purchases. If your aim is to make money from the Amazon Affiliate Kick-backs, then make the App freeware, you can't have both. Its no surprise to see you giving away free licences to every Celeb you see, it's not Marketing, you know Rich Celebs make lots of purchases from Amazon, and now your getting a %. Still Dissapointed with 1.5.
The last post is a bunch of ignorant bull shit. We give %100 of our Amazon kick-backs to charity. If your using your own affiliates ID for your own purchases you are in violations of your Amazon Affiliates user agreement.
Mike if that is true that you give %100 (sic) of Amazon kick-backs to charity, why is that not know? Why don't you stipulate that on the website. I would be more than happy to support the Delicious Library, if I knew said Kick-Backs were going somewhere worthy. It would not be the first time, a developer hid kick-backs inside an App, and if you choose to donate your commissions to charity, let me as a consumer know, so that I can distinguish you from other many hungry developers. Yourself no longer included per my error.
We sent out a press release when we made our first round of donations and also highlight it on the front page of www.delicious-monster.com in the lower right hand corner of the feature list.
Secondly as a Business owner, my using of my own Affiliate ID is not in violation of the Amazon Affiliates user agreement, as per your own preference, to include your own ID when making Amazon purchases, from weblinks where your own ID is not automatically inserted. That assumption could almost be considered Ignorant BS too?
I've got no idea what the last guy's ranting about, but this looks like good work, guys. Just wish Australia was counted as one of those international locations you've added support for.
1. There's a typo in the title of this post
2. The new Dashboard widget is surprisingly very fast. The animation is really nice
3. I don't know why or how it's done but by default, when I enter a book by title, I always get to the Amazon France web site (I'm a froggy) even though my system is in English. I didn't see any preferences allowing me to tell that I want search to be performed with Amazon US by default. But may be it's just me.
4. Wouldn't there any plan to have a screen saver like the old icon one or the new iTunes cover one using the Delicious Library catalog? Maybe something more serious could be done such as: displaying a random book with its cover, title, price and a quick sum-up. Maybe that could be used in real library (if they use a Mac of course).
cool, i see Delicious Library is featured on the front page of the new apple download site. well done lads, it's a fantastic little application.
Any chance of syncing of libraries between different macs? I have three macs, and it would be great to have my library available on all of them!
First Off,
I don't think DM should be giving the Amazon kickbacks to charity. Last time I checked, DM was a Company, I don't see what the problem with getting paid as an affilate is?
Bottom line, DM is a company, companies make money, they never said they would'nt attempt to build other incomes streams when you bought the software.
Plenty of Companies/Website do it they are taking advantage of Amazon's APIs to do alot of the cool functionality the software does do you want them to remove it?!
Wow.. some people..
Anonymous (Re: Amazon %), this is Drew from Delicious Monster. You can read about our charity support at our main website, at the bottom right of the Features list ("Support Charities"). Hover over the icon for more information. We also have a FAQ entry on our Help page about it. It *is* against Amazon's affiliate agreement to use your own ID, and Delicious Library is intended for single-user use. If you're using it in a different environment and are haven't talked to us, you're in violation of OUR license key. We think we've found a more-than-just-fair solution and accusing us of any conspiracy here is absolutely ridiculous.
osj, this is Drew from Delicious Monster. You can "sync" your machines - just keep the entire ~/Library/Application Support/Delicious Library/ folders (found in your home folder) in sync on both Macs. There's no way to automate this from Delicious Library, but as long as you keep the folders the same (using a third-party tool or whatever), you will have the same library on both machines.
Anonymous (Re: Amazon France), we choose the default country based on your Date & Time System Preferences. Is your country set to France?
I was a bit disapointed with the previous version. 1.5, with its international reach is just fantastic. I love it.
Hi guys, great new version, thanks!
The only problem I have (this one I share with Anonymous) is the automatic selection of the Amazon store. Even though I'm French, I buy most of my books and DVDs from Amazon UK, sometimes Amazon US, rarely Amazon France. Changing Date and Time system prefs will take longer than changing DL prefs.
So, an update would be most welcome!!!
of course, a good update! The spotlight "checked out dvds" works insanely great. This is such a cool app.
I think everyone is waiting for some Automator actions, syncing across computers ( .Mac API?), and somehow integrate DVD Player into the whole loop.
Is there any API to integrate the online Amazon account with Delicious Library?
Hey, this is Drew from Delicious Monster.
Stéphane, have you actually tried 1.5 yet? I really don't think it's as bad as it may have been made out to be. When you're scanning items or adding items by UPC we should get the correct country code and look it up regardless. It's just automatic. With Find by Title searches, you can choose which country you want.
The only caveat here is ISBN numbers and Amazon #s. Neither of these necessarily have country codes in the number, and so we do our "best guess." This can involve checking your Date & Time preferences.
But really, there shouldn't be any issues here. You most certainly shouldn't have to be changing System Preferences back and forth, and you really shouldn't have to change anything at all. If you have instances where this isn't the case, I'd love to hear about them at delicious@delicious-monster.com
Drew: Absolutely, I'm using the French standard time format on this machine.
It prevents me from feeling like I restarted my day from scratch at noon.
Hey Drew,
You're right, I hadn't actually tried it and I have now...
I scanned an English paperback and a US one, and both were recognized, so my bad!
However, the UPCs are from amazon.fr, with a price in €, no summary or users' ratings and nothing in "Find similar". Also, the icons are icons from hardcover books, not paperbacks.
This comes from Amazon, not you, and I wonder what the best solution may be; I don't care about reading the format in French or seeing a price in euros and I'd rather get a full description from the country where it was released. However, if the UPC belongs to the amazon.fr database I wonder how you mauy determine it's an American book...
Stéphane
Anonymous, I'm a little confused as to why you're confused. We use the Date & Time preferences to detect where you are. If you say you're in France, we believe you - and we'll choose France by default for the Find by Title initial popup choice. How is this a problem? That sounds like perfect behavior to me. Let me know if I'm totally missing something here.
Stéphane, unfortunately UPC codes have no country code designations. So what we do is convert them to EAN codes and try them in your native country first. This behavior also seems right to me and it works 99% of the time it seems like. There is one edge case like this one you've mentioned: if you're in France and you're scanning a UPC (even if it's a US one), we'll unfortunately look to France natively because we just have no way to know. If you think there's a better way we could handle this, please file suggestions in the Help menu by choosing "Send Bugs & Feedback."
Certainly I could envision some sort of setting on an item that lets you manually select what country that item is from. In the mean time, you could always perform a Find by Title search for the item as well, which actually does let you choose what country the item will be from.
Let me clarify: what I envisioned in my last post is not a feature we have announced or even currently have plans for - I was simply musing on possibilities. If you think we should consider such a UI or want to make suggestions, definitely file feedback in our application like I mentioned above. We read and file all of the suggestions sent from that form, although we aren't always able to reply to individual feature requests. Thanks!
Drew: I can be in France and using the French Date-Time format and still be using my OS in English and reading mostly English books.
I checked this with myself and yes it's actually what I'm doing. So would I be able to state that the default location to look for when I enter a book title is Amazon US would be cool (Amazon FR does not list all the Jeffery Deaver books for instance).
Sorry but I didn't find the option to stop being me.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get the widget or spotlight to work. I'm a 1.0 to 1.5 upgrader, and I also upgraded the HD in my powerbook when I moved to tiger. All my titles are there, but I apparently need to force spotlight to index them. Any tips?
Also, using Date/Time to set country codes is a good idea, but if you're a US expat living overseas, it won't give you optimal results.
I found what was wrong over here. http://www.macupdate.com/reviews.php?id=16417&pid=103027
Ignore the problems with spotlight/dashboard, but I think the date/time setting could still be an issue for travelers/expats. It's a good default, but there should be an override.
First I'd like to say this is an excellent piece of software, great job guys. However, I'm wondering if there's a way to share the same library data between different users on the same system? I nearly fell off my chair when i scanned my first barcode using my firewire miniDV cam. Amazing.
Drew,
The problem with auto-selecting where a search takes place according to Date&Time preferences is simple: I'm British, but live in France. My computer has to be set to France, but my books come from Amazon UK. Amazon France is no good to me. And that's the problem IF it worked properly. For some reason, this new version has me hooked up to Amazon Japan. I think we need more flexibility here.
I too am getting results from Amazon Japan despite the fact that results are displayed in English on the Amazon page, my date-time preferences are set to US, and I haved tried several times to select "load from Amazon US" in the DL prefs and then restart.
Nothing works; DL still loads from Amazon Japan so I am getting info in Japanese and prices in yen. What gives??
