My Varlomos Calzone Box
Sunday, March 20, 2005

About a year ago I was having dinner at my favorite pizzeria, Varlamos, talking with the owner Kosta. He told me he was going to start making a boxed frozen version of his famous "football sized" calzones that he was going to sell at local grocery stores. This sounded like a really delicious idea so I told him if he needed a guy to design a box I would love help out.
A couple weeks later he gave me a call and I started desiging his box. I called up my friend Christoper Mascoiocchi, a professional photo retoucher and designer, and got him to help me out with the project. We came up with nice simple design that feels kinda like something that would come out of a little neighborhood deli.
One of the hardest parts of the project was getting a good looking photo of the calzone for the front of the box. If you have ever seen a good photo of food on a box I can assure you it was fake. Food that looks good in person looks really bad in photos. Food is just not photogenic. After a few failed attempts I finaly managed to take a semi-decent photo of the calzone. I quickly turned around and sent it to Christoper who worked his magic and turned my semi-decent photo into a perfect mouth-watering shot.
The Varlomos Calzones are now finally avalible at Metropolitan Markets and Red Apple Markets around Seattle, with more stores to come soon. If you live in the area keep your eyes peeled at the grocery store. These are some really tasty calzones.

Being a fan of both Varlamos and Metropolitan Market, this is great news!
I think I stared at the before & after photo for 10 minutes looking at everything. Geez... every little detail.
Have you tried Metropolitan Markets veggie sandwiches? They are soooooo good. They make up about 50% of my diet.
I'm really amazed at the photo retouching done there, it's a completely different image - would be great to see a tutorial on that process! Man if only I lived in Seattle I could try one of these :|
So from your previous posts and this one, I'm making an assumption that you're vegeterian? Nice...
I am sooooo hungry. How can I get one of these to Salt Lake before dinner tonight?
Yes! Are you a vegeterian, Mike??? I must know!
Yes I am a vegetarian. Wail I am on the topic of food maybe I will post something about my favorite vegetarian places in town.
are you a vegiterian because you think it's cruel to eat meat or because you don't like meat?
"Wail" - do you mean "While?"
Grrr, im hungry now !!!!
nice design.

that's truly awesome... I can't believe the before and after of the food.
i also really like the fun detail of putting a maze on the box.
your brother's illustration should be used on the menu cover, or something. great work!
Is there anywhere within walking distance of UW that I could get this? Looks worth a shot.
